Many PTs have turned to TikTok as a creative way to educate and engage their audiences, using short videos to build connections and grow their practices. But now an upcoming nationwide ban has some practice owners asking, “Now what?” Don’t panic, we’ve got you covered.
What’s Happening?

The future of TikTok in the U.S. is uncertain as it faces a looming ban on Jan. 19, 2025, due to data privacy concerns. The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), which President Biden signed into law in April 2024, grants the government the authority to ban foreign-owned apps that it deems a threat to national security.
On Friday January 17, the Supreme Court upheld the law — which means the ban can go ahead. Because of this law now in place, four possible scenarios are on the table for TikTok:
- TikTok is banned, but existing users keep access: The app will no longer be available for download by new users, and updates may eventually stop, leading to reduced functionality over time.
- TikTok is banned and decides to shut itself down in the USA: In this case, the app would stop working for all U.S. users, effectively erasing its presence. Instead, it would show a pop-up explaining the ban.
- Deadline is (somehow) extended: TikTok could get more time to address security concerns, temporarily delaying any action.
- TikTok is sold: The app’s U.S. operations could be sold to an American company, avoiding a ban altogether. However, this scenario would take time meaning the ban would likely take effect for some time prior to a deal being worked out.
For now, TikTok remains operational, but with the uncertainty surrounding its future, it’s important to plan ahead. Start focusing on diversifying your marketing channels to ensure your practice remains visible and adaptable, no matter what happens.
Will TikTok Be Deleted From My Phone?
No. Once the law takes effect on January 19, TikTok will be removed from Apple and Google app stores, and it won’t be accessible on computers either. New users won’t be able to download the app, but if it’s already installed on your phone, it will remain functional for now.
However, TikTok won’t be able to release updates or bug fixes, meaning the app will gradually become less reliable and eventually unusable over time.
Finally, if TikTok decides to shut off access to the USA on Sunday, there’s a chance that when you open your app, all you’ll see is a pop-up explaining the ban.
How Could This Impact PT Owners?

TikTok’s popularity with younger audiences has made it a favorite for PTs to share short, engaging videos showcasing exercises, recovery tips, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of their practice. These efforts have successfully attracted new patients and built stronger relationships with current ones.
If TikTok is banned or loses functionality, your audience may shrink. But this doesn’t spell disaster. Instead, see this as a chance to refine your marketing strategy. Explore other platforms, adopt new tools, and find innovative ways to connect with your patients.

Workarounds & Winning Alternatives
A potential TikTok ban doesn’t mean your marketing efforts are wasted. Here are some practical alternatives to stay ahead of the game:
- Instagram Reels & Stories: Instagram is a proven powerhouse for short-form video content. With tools like Reels and Stories, you can create engaging posts that reach both existing followers and new audiences. Bonus: Instagram’s platform integrates well with Facebook for an even wider reach.
- YouTube Shorts: YouTube is another excellent platform to consider. YouTube Shorts has grown significantly in popularity and is a fantastic way to repurpose your existing TikTok content for a fresh audience. Plus, YouTube’s search engine power gives your videos long-lasting visibility.
- Google Ads: Want to reach local patients actively searching for physical therapy? Google Ads can help you do just that. Unlike video-based platforms, this approach focuses on search-based content, targeting people as they look for solutions to their pain or injuries. By appearing front and center in search results at the most critical moment, you can connect with potential patients who are ready to take action!
- Email Marketing: Don’t overlook the power of email! Build an email list and share tips, updates, and patient success stories directly with your audience. It’s a low-cost, high-impact way to stay connected.
