🧠   Google Ads Now Showing in AI Overviews

What It Means for HIPAA-Sensitive Advertisers
As of June 2025, Google has expanded its AI-powered search experience (“AI Overviews” and “AI Mode”) to include paid ads directly within AI-generated answers, now live across U.S. desktop searches.
Why This Matters to Physical Therapy & Physiotherapy Clinics:

  • Your Search Ads may now appear inside AI-generated summaries, not just in the usual ad slots.
  • This change affects how and where your ads are shown, especially during non-branded, top-of-funnel searches like “how to treat back pain” or “rehab after ACL surgery.”
  • Important for HIPAA compliance: These placements are still subject to Google’s privacy policies, but audience targeting remains limited. Avoid using sensitive health language in targeting settings and landing pages to stay compliant. Our Recommendation:

  • Monitor campaigns closely for changes in click quality, conversion behavior, and search queries.
  • Focus on broad match with strong negative keywords to control traffic.
  • Ensure your ad copy and landing pages remain general, educational, and HIPAA-safe (no conditions + symptoms + location combos).
